The World Health Organization defines well-being as “a state of mind in which an individual is able to realize his or her own abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Hence, when one experiences a great deal of stress, and his protective factors and/or coping mechanisms are not enough, this could present a potential threat to his/ her well-being.

Fortunately, there is something that we could do. One form of meditation, which dated back to the 19th Century, is believed to lead to insight into the true nature of self and reality (impermanence, the suffering of conditioned existence, and non-self). “Practicing mindfulness can bring improvements in both physical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in health, attitudes, and behaviors,” according to Professor emeritus Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mindfulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past, are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem and are better able to form deep connections with others.

Lastly, it improves physical, mental, and overall well-being.
